About Cotton & Son Funeral Directors
Who We Are
Cotton & Son is a family-owned and run funeral directors in Dorset, serving the communities of Weymouth, Portland, and the surrounding areas for over 100 years. Established in 1912, our role has always been to provide care, support, and guidance, helping families through each step of arranging a funeral with dignity, compassion, and professionalism.
For much of its history, Cotton & Son was personally overseen by Jane Cotton, whose late husband Peter represented the third generation of the Cotton family to dedicate his life to the business. Peter followed in the footsteps of his father John and grandfather Edward, upholding the family’s long tradition of service.
In June 2023, Jane entrusted the business to A.J. Wakely & Sons, a respected family of funeral directors with values and traditions closely aligned with our own. Jane continued to work alongside the team until her retirement in mid-2024, ensuring a smooth and thoughtful transition.
Today, Cotton & Son remains in safe hands under the care of Simon Wakely, supported by our dedicated team:

Funeral Director, who joined in 2008
Peter Smith
Training Funeral Director, who joined in 2018 and is learning under the guidance of Simon and Margaret
Both Margaret and Nathan are qualified Funeral Directors through the NAFD (National Association of Funeral Directors), and together with our team of funeral assistants, bearers, and drivers, we form a close-knit group committed to delivering professional, compassionate care.
