Get Help with Funeral Costs
We understand that the cost of arranging a funeral can be a concern, particularly at an already difficult time. If you receive certain benefits and are responsible for arranging a funeral, you may be eligible for help towards some of the costs through a Funeral Expenses Payment.
Who to Contact for Help with Funeral Costs
The easiest way to apply for a Funeral Expenses Payment is to telephone the government helpline on 0800 731 0469 and choose option 2. Lines are open from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
A Funeral Expenses Payment may help towards some of the following costs:
- Burial fees for a particular plot
- Cremation fees, including the cost of doctors' certificates
- Travel to arrange or attend the funeral
- The cost of moving the person who has died within the UK, if they are being moved more than 50 miles
- Death certificates or other necessary documents
You may also be able to receive up to £1000 towards other funeral expenses, such as funeral director's fees, flowers or a coffin.
A Funeral Expenses Payment will not usually cover the full cost of a funeral, and the amount you may receive will depend on your individual circumstances. This can include any other money available to help pay for the funeral, such as money from an insurance policy or the estate of the person who has died.

As part of our commitment to supporting bereaved families, we work with the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF) to provide access to further bereavement support and advice.
Through SAIF Care, families can access a free bereavement care helpline and online chat service, staffed by trained bereavement specialists. The SAIF Care team is available to offer a listening ear, provide reliable information and help you find appropriate sources of support and services in your local area.
